Travel Funds

Dear Mountain Meteorology Conference Participants,

We are pleased to announce four opportunities for students to apply for financial support in connection with the 13th AMS Conference on Mountain Meteorology.

*Mountain Meteorology Committee Support.*
Three awards of $400 each will be available to students attending the conference who need financial assistance for travel costs. Students may apply for this support by sending an email to Ms. Lisa Darby describing their planned activities at the conference (giving a paper, etc), the source of the funds they will use for the remainder of the conference related travel, and why additional travel support from the AMS is necessary. This email should include a statement of concurrence by the student's advisor and the advisor's email address. The students selected will be required to pay for their travel expenses, but will be reimbursed after submitting receipts to the AMS. Applications are due by Thursday, May 15, 2008. Applicants will be notified of the decisions by Friday, May 30, 2008.
*EMS Young Scientist Travel Award*
The European Meteorological Society (EMS) will offer a single travel award of 500 Euros for a young scientist or student from a country that has an EMS member society. Go to the EMS website for an overview of which countries have EMS member societies. Recipients must be under 35 years of age on January 1, 2008. Non-Europeans who work in a European country having an EMS member society are also eligible. Note that there are no individual memberships in EMS; EMS members consist of national meteorological societies. Applications should be sent to Dr. Stephen Mobbs and should consist of
- a short curriculum vitae
- a document to determine the age of the candidate
- a copy of the letter of acceptance for an oral or poster presentation at the conference
- a recommendation or support statement from a member of the respective national society, and
- a short statement of how financial support would help the participation of the young scientist.
Applications should be received by Friday, May 9, 2008. Applicants will be notified of funding decisions by Friday, May 30, 2008.
*Student Support at the conference*.
Volunteer students are needed for registration and audio/visual support during the AMS conference. Requirements are that the volunteers be in attendance through the entire conference, and be available to work ½ day each day from Sunday through Friday. The students will have to work either the first or second shift (i.e., morning or afternoon). For volunteering, students will get their registration fee waived and receive $25.00 a day for a food allowance. Selection of applicants will be based on a first come, first served basis. A limited number of students will be needed for the Conference. Interested students should contact Ms. Brenda Ward.
American Meteorological Society Student Meeting Travel Grants
These travel grants are available for senior undergraduate and graduate students to attend AMS meetings held in the U.S. or Canada. These travel grants are for students who are members of the AMS and who are NOT presenting a paper. Details are explained on this AMS webpage. There is also an online application form on this page.
