WEST's 5th Annual Ski Day and Snow Sampling

Fellows and faculty enjoyed a beautiful day in the Wasatch Mountains while collecting snow samples to test for pollutants (click here for more photos).  Learn about air pollution in the snowpack.

Silver Lake Field Trips

In October 2008, several WEST schools participated in field trips to Silver Lake to learn about plants, animals, geology, weather and water quality in the Wasatch Mountains.  Click here for more information about the trips.

What is WEST?

Project WEST (Water, the Environment, Science, and Teaching) is a National Science Foundation sponsored program to promote discovery-based science in the public schools. WEST partners the University of Utah, the Utah Museum of Natural History, and the Salt Lake City School District to enhance inquiry-based science teaching in grades 4-9.

Graduate student “fellows” from the University of Utah’s departments of Geology and Geophysics, Biology, and Meteorology work with public school teachers to develop hands-on lesson plans, conduct experiments, and lead field trips that immerse students in the scientific process. The ultimate goal of WEST is to instill in students a sense of wonder and passion about nature that will inspire them to choose career paths in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) disciplines.

WEST's EARTHscape is an online resource for information, resources, lessons, and ideas about water and the environment along Utah's Wasatch Front.  WEST fellows from the departments of Geology and Geophysics, Biology, and Meteorology work in teams to create content that is multidisciplinary in nature and multi-tiered in scope.
