*Announcing the University of Utah Department of Atmospheric Sciences!*
Following the unanimous endorsement and approval of our faculty, staff, and students, our name is changing from the Department of Meteorology to the Department of Atmospheric Sciences. (Click above for more information.)
When our Department was founded more than 50 years ago, it concentrated primarily on weather research and prediction. While we continue to maintain a strong program in weather research and prediction, our research and teaching endeavors today extend across the full spectrum of the atmospheric sciences and include core programs in cloud-climate interactions and remote sensing, numerical modeling and data assimilation, mountain weather and climate, cloud physics and boundary layer meteorology, hydroclimatology, air quality, and wildfire prediction. The new name reflects the breadth of teaching and research activities within the Department, trends in our profession, and growth in interdisciplinary research and education in areas related to the atmospheric sciences.Keep an eye out for changes to our web site and newsletter in the coming weeks. We hope to have a redesigned web site in place by this summer.
