Meteorology
Lesson Plans Using MesoWest:
Lessons plans are available for using the meteorological inforamation from MesoWest to teach science concepts. Inquiry based lessons are made possible through manipulation of the data by students.
The Great Salt Lake: Fauna and Meteorology:
This page provides information regarding atomspheric circulations and bodies of water such as the Great Salt Lake with an emphasis on the relation to local animal species.
Science Appetizers - November 11, 2000:
An educational event for Utah educators. MesoWest staff will be running two sessions:
"Western Omelets" & "Baked Alaska". Check this site for more details.
Utah School Weather Links Home Page:
This page provides links to weather data collected at Utah schools and is
sponsored by Pleasant Grove Junior High School.
Science Teacher
Inservice Training:
MesoWest was provided as a resource to K-12 educators via
a teacher's inservice project on
"Weather and Meteorology". The inservice workshop was condcuted this
during the summer of 1999 at Bingham High School.
As part of the workshop, staff affiliated with MesoWest participated by spending
an afternoon training teachers on accessing data
and graphics from MesoWest for use in the classroom.
Urban
Heat Island Project:
MesoWest is a participant in this NASA project which is monitoring
urban heat islands with
the use of remote sensings instrumentation on satellites.
Project Atlanta was the fist in a series of cities monitored
for the heat island affect. NASA came to Salt
Lake City during the heat of summer and collected data via satellite,
aircraft, and radiosondes. K-12 students participated in this project by
taking surface observations of temperature in
sunny and shady areas across the Salt Lake Valley. The Cooperative Insitute
for Regional Prediction (CIRP) provided
helium for balloon launches on the University of Utah Campus and is providing
analyses of surface temperature from
data collected as part of MesoWest. CIRP is also involved
in a related Department of Energy project called
Cool Communities
which hopes to mitigate the effects of the urban heat island. Cool
Communities operates in cities
such as Los Angeles and Sacramento.
