Me and my Compatriots, and our Various Exploits: Pictures and Stories

April 26, 2005: Snow coring expedition to Ben Lomond Peak, supporting Scott Hynek's isotope research. Photos by Jim Steenburgh and Greg West.
         Scott does some science.
The low elevation snowpack was thin in places.
Here's me at the BLPU1 snotel site, alongside my 3.2 meter avalanche probe.
The snow was more than 3.2 meters deep.
We dug an 11-foot deep snowpit to get snow cores all the way to the ground.
In an effort to get better photos of the pit, I climbed a tree.
Having concluded our research activities for the day, we slodged on towards the summit of Ben Lomond.
         On the summit ridgeline.
Fascinating meteorology. Clouds formed on the west side of the sharp Wasatch Crest, while the east side remained clear.
On the way down, we found snow that was kind of like powder, but different.
Bouncy turns required. This is me, having quite a lot of fun.
Another picture of me skiing down to Scott and Jim.
         Jim enjoys uncut spring-weird snow.
         That's me, dropping the knee.
The town of Eden, nestled in the valley below, is turning green while we play in the snow.
Our up- and down-tracks on the southeast ridge of Ben Lomond.
A wider shot of Ben Lomond from Cutler Ridge, showing the entire summit ridge.
Hoofing it back to the car.

April 17, 2005: Corn harvesting in Mill D, with Stacey, Greg, Emily, and Ben. Photos by Greg Mercer.
Here's the gang, minus Greg who took the photo.
The day was warm, but it was windy at the top.
Stacey stops to admire the breathtaking views to the south.
         Emily displays fine telemark form.
Here's me. I've got skinny skis and low-cut boots, fine for corn skiing.
         Stacey cuts a nice arc.
Here's me again, nearing the bottom.

March 19, 2005: Black Diamond Powder Keg randonee race.
Me de-skinning at the top of the Black Bess climb out of Grizzly Gulch. I finished the race in 2 hours, 46 minutes, 22 seconds.

Thanksgiving, 2004: Climbing trip to Red Rocks, Nevada.
This is me nearing the top of a sport climb in the Black Corridor that has a tricky start.

August 28, 2004: Grass track racing in New Hampshire. I "fixed" three bikes from the barn for the races. I highly recommend this form of entertainment.
Mountain bike found in barn. It was ready to go with horizontal dropouts. 38x16.
My mother's Bianchi from her high school days. 38x17.
         My handmedown Peugeot. 50x20.
There were some bold costumes. Everyone finished with all limbs and clothes accounted for.
At the starting line, teams ready for launch.
         Three, two, one...
         And they're off!
         A successful rider exchange

June 21-25, 2004: Mountain meteorology conference in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Craig, Scott, and I took a little time to enjoy the Granite State and its three-star moderate climbing.
The first afternoon of the conference. Craig and I climbed Thin Air. This is me starting up the first pitch.
A little further up the first pitch.
Craig at the top of Thin Air.
Me at the top of Thin Air.
Both of us at the top of Thin Air. We took advantage of the beautiful afternoon, and got back to the conference in time for our poster session.
On Wednesday, Scott joined us for a climb of the Pinnacle Ridge in Huntington Ravine on Mount Washington. Here's me, sporting my conference name badge.
After some scrambling, we got to some fun climbing. I contemplated the first few moves.
         Here's Scott.
Me halfway up the pitch, keeping my ear to the ground.
         Scott starting up.
Me cresting the top of the third pitch with Wildcat ski area to the east. The skies had cleared nicely.
         Running to the belay ledge.
Craig belaying Scott up the third pitch. Scott popped off and discovered how much a thin rope stretches, even on toprope.
         Craig posing for the camera.
Craig and Scott, pleased with the day's progress.
Scott getting on to the exposed hand traverse.
Scott enjoys the mountain air below his feet.
Scott and Craig at the top of the climb. We packed our gear and hiked to the summit, hitched a ride down the auto road, and made it to town for dinner.
Craig hiking up towards Nelson Crag from the top of Huntington.
         Craig posing again.
On Friday afternoon, Craig and I climbed the Standard Route on Whitehorse Ledge. It follows the arch in the lower right, then traverses right to the left-slanting ramps, then to the top of the slabs. 9 pitches!
That's me at the top of the lower slabs, the bottom of the arch.
Craig at the bottom of the arch.
This is me leading up the bottom of the arch. Rain threatened all afternoon. I thought the camera flash was lightning.
Craig sitting at a comfortable belay, somewhere on the route.
That's me, tired from a long week of talks and climbing.

March 4, 2004: Porter Fork and Thayne's tour with Jim Steenburgh and Scott Hynek.
Jim in a rare moment of flight.
         Me and Scott matching turns.
         Me, enjoying myself.

9 April 2002: Snow survey of Parish Creek, near Bountiful, Utah.
Our sweet ride for the day, thanks to Classic Helicopter Services and Naoki Mizukami's master's project.
Naoki Mizukami and the ship. Ever ride in one of those, Naoki?
The first team rides up to the ridge and we wait patiently for our turn.
The shadow of the ship as we lift off at last.
Jamie looks like he does this all the time.
         That's me.
         Beautiful Bountiful.
         Ben Lomond Peak.
         Antelope Island.
         The Oquirrh Mountains.
The view out the side window as we bank in towards our landing spot.
Sure is loud. Wonder why I'm taking pictures.
         Looking southwest from the ridge.
         Looking west from the ridge.
         Looking northwest from the ridge.
         Looking north from the ridge.
Bob demonstrating our snow sampling technique.
Done with our first transect. There's the ride back up!
The ship with our snow tube. Good thing the rotor's not turning, tall things are a no-no when the engine is running.
Barely visible is one of our survey teams, roughly 100 meters apart.
Ed, in striking profile, doing some photojournalism.
         Ed contemplating another shot.
Done with our transects, we wait by the snotel site for the helicopter to pick us up. That's Bob, Randy, and Ed.
         The snotel site, looking north.
         Finally, there's our ride.
I guess you can fit a helicopter in that clearing.
Back at Woods Cross, Jamie brings it in for a perfect landing.

8 July 2001: Climb of the Taschachwand, Pitztalalpen, Austria, with Roland and Rainer Mayr. Pictures by Roland.
Raising an ice tool in victory- three hundred meters of alpine ice behind me at last.
The illustrious Rainer Mayr, er bleibt sauber.
Another shot of me, rescinding a promise made while pumped out and simul-soloing the upper section of the wall to never alpine climb again.
Me and Rainer re-hydrating and preparing for the glacier walk and glissade back to the hut.

9 May 2001: Climb and ski of the Pfeiferhorn with Aaron. Link to account and pictures.

22 April 2001: Last day at Alta, outrageous powder day party.
Lunch break at the car- ready to ski again!
         Jamie's expression captures the mood.

27 March 2001: Climb and ski of the southeast face of Mt. Superior.
Aaron at the base of the climb, early in the morning.
Aaron exchanging hiking boots for ski boots for the remainder of the hike.
Me looking ready for anything. Maybe a cup of coffee will fall out of the sky.
         Sunrise over Patsy Marley.
Looking up at our objective, still a couple thousand feet up. That debris pile looks like fun skiing!
Aaron negotiaing the avalanche debris. Like walking up the stairs.
The sun starting to hit the upper slopes. We are starting to worry about rockfall.
Aaron chugging away, looking pleased with our progress.
Aaron and an acquaintance of his who joined us on the way up, on their way to the summit gully. Ice axe time!
Looking south across Little Cottonwood Canyon towards Mt. Baldy.
American Forks Twin Peak and Snowbird from about two-thirds of the way up Sup.
Aaron just below the summit gully, the crux of the climb and descent. No falling rocks- they were all cemented into the icy snow.

Account of climb at RedRocks, NV, with Erin, Andrew, and Chris, in which we meet and ignore the advice of Fred Beckey.

Approaching the summit of Patsy Marley as the sun rises.
Panorama showing Alta, Superior, Flagstaff, Silver Fork, to Twin Lakes Pass.
Cutting a cornice with skis to test the slope below.
Aaron kicking the same cornice. Not too exciting, which is good.

Gary's poetic musings on the outing, and more pictures.
         Smiling big for some reason...
         Must be the new skis.
         Struggling with new, too-sticky skins.
Dropping into a foot of powder with my new fat boards.
         Having toooo much fun.
         Gary loving life.

Looking southeast down Calle Mercado at Nev. Illimani
The stunning summit ridge of Pequeno Alpamayo. Steven and Dave summitted, Craig and I turned back 200 feet short due to bad weather. We got this view as the clouds parted briefly on the way down.
Dave on a scary traverse on the way down from P. Alpamayo. I am the orange dot on the next peak, belaying Craig.
Dave's big picture of Steven on P. Alpamayo.
Dave took this of Craig approaching the scary traverse on P. Alpamayo, with me leading across.
Dave took this of Steven, I think at their high point around 20,000 feet, on Illimani.
