The Fifth Annual Workshop on Weather Prediction in the Intermountain West will be held on Friday, October 30, 1998 at the University of Utah. The objectives of the workshop are to discuss major issues related to operational meteorology over the western United States and to foster the interaction between researchers, applied meteorologists, and other professionals who rely on operational weather forecasts or data. Over one hundred individuals from throughout the United States have attended each of the previous workshops. Participants may also be interested in attending a special workshop on the use and application of the Utah Mesonet that will be held on the preceding day, Thursday, October 29. An announcment regarding this workshop will be released in the near future.
The focus of this year's workshop is on the structure, analysis, and prediction of winter storms over the western United States. Major topics of interest include, but are not limited to, orographic precipitation (rain or snow) and hydrometeorology, mountain snowpack and/or avalanche prediction, downslope and gap winds, cyclone/frontal interaction with topography, and numerical/statistical weather prediction over complex terrain. The one-day workshop will consist of several invited talks, 10-15 minute oral presentations, and open discussions. Poster presentations are also strongly encouraged. A conference schedule is available below. The deadline for conference registration and abstract submission has passed. Individuals who are interested in attending but have not already registered should contact Jim Steenburgh at jimsteen@met.utah.edu or (801) 581-8727.
The workshop is being hosted by the NOAA Cooperative Institute for Regional Prediction with support from the UCAR COMET program. Attendees from beyond the Wasatch Front may contact the Best Western Olympus Hotel at (800) 426-0722 or (801) 521-7373 for reservations.
