2001 Workshop Program and links to Presentations
The workshop features invited talks related to winter weather in the Intermountain West and the many facets of the weather support required for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. The workshop is intended to provide a short course on winter weather. Many of the challenges facing the Olympic forecast team parallel those faced by operational forecasters throughout the Intermountain West. Topics that will be covered, include: the roles of the groups involved in Olympic weather forecasting, winter weather forecast challenges (large-scale weather systems, orographic and lake-effect precipitation, local mountain flows, venue microclimates), long range climate outlook for February-March 2002, operational model guidance provided by NCEP, applications of MesoWest and the Intermountain Weather Forecast System, and leveraging the current high-level of interest in Olympic winter weather to improve weather prediction in the Intermountain West in the future. The Workshop schedule is now available below.
Individuals interested in attending the workshop may register using an on-line registration form. The deadline for registration has been extended to 26 October 2001. We are anticipating a larger attendance than previous years- please register as soon as possible to help us plan for the workshop. While there are no fees associated with the Workshop, a nominal fee is anticipated to cover the cost to distribute a CD of the workshop presentations to all participants.
