Dr. David Randall, Colorado State University: "Modeling the climate system with geodesic grids and Lagrangian vertical coordinates"
Abstract / Event Description:
We have constructed a coupled GCM, called CCoSM (Coupled Colorado State Model), including both atmosphere and ocean sub-models, using geodesic grids based on the icosahedron. CCoSM also includes sea ice and land surface sub-models. The atmosphere and ocean models both use quasi-Lagrangian vertical coordinates. CCoSM includes a geodesic coupler, which permits the atmosphere to run with lower horizontal resolution than the other components. CCoSM is currently being tested, both by driving the components with observations, and in short coupled simulations. This talk will present the design of CCoSM, summarize the current status of the model, and briefly outline our plans for future work.
