Dr. Kevin Perry, UU Meteorology: "An Introduction to the Weather Derivative Industry"
Abstract / Event Description:
The weather derivative industry makes use of meteorological
observations and predictions to establish the fair market
value of weather insurance policies. These weather insurance
policies can be bought, sold, and traded on the Chicago
Mercantile Exchange in a manner analagous to commodity futures.
Because the weather is typically independent of the global
economy, weather derivatives provide financial investors with
an attractive portfolio diversification option. As a result,
weather derivatives have turned into a multi-billion dollar
industry.
