Undergraduate Program

Undergraduate programs at the University of Utah meet the educational needs of the weather enthusiast, prepare students for long and rewarding careers in meteorology and the related environmental sciences, and introduce students to the societal and economic impacts of weather and climate. The meteorology major combines courses in meteorology and other disciplines to develop an academic background that is appropriate for a variety of career opportunities. Majors develop a solid foundation in mathematics, physics, and chemistry during the first two years and then study dynamic, physical, and synoptic meteorology during the junior and senior years. The meteorology minor introduces students to the impacts of the atmosphere upon society and enables students to apply scientific principles in an interdisciplinary way. A unique aspect of our program is its emphasis on mountain weather and climate, which is a natural extension of the geographic setting of the University of Utah. Majors also become conversant in fields such as hydrology, air pollution, computer science, and communications. The Meteorology Bachelor of Science satisfies the requirements for employment as a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, and many of our graduates have moved on to meteorology or environmental science careers in the government and private sectors. For additional information concerning our curriculum, please see our meteorology major, meteorology minor, undergraduate courses, and About the U web pages.
